Description

About the car

The BMW 2002 Turbo was part of the BMW 02 Series. This was a range of compact executive cars produced by German automaker BMW between 1966 and 1977, based on a shortened version of the New Class Sedans. The BMW 2002 turbo is the forerunner of all internal combustion engines with an exhaust turbocharger.

The BMW 2002 Turbo featured an M10 inline engine with two-litre capacity.  The car used the Kühnle, Kopp and Kausch turbocharger (KKK) which delivered makes 125 kW (170 hp) at 5,800 revs and 240 Nm at 4,000 revs. The engine had a compression ratio of 6.9:1 which prevented engine knocking.  The manual shift offered four gears, with five as an option. The car had acceleration of 0 to 100kmh in 7 seconds. The car had a top speed of 211 km/h.

The 2002 Turbo was introduced just before the 1973 oil crisis. In order to save fuel, the Germany government imposed a number of measures including four car-free Sundays and a 6-month autobahn speed limit of 100 km/h. This led to drop in demand for the BMW 2002 Turbo.  Only 1,672 were built.
