Description

BMW 2800 CS – 24 Heures du Mans 1972 – (155722749):

The BMW 2800 CS was the first in their line of E9 coupes. It replaced the 2000 C and 2000 CS in 1968, and was incredibly stylish and suave.

As a racing car, the E9 was very successful in the European Touring Car Championship, as well as the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft.

BMW wanted to make their cars look a bit sleeker and less ‘boxy,’ so they increased the wheelbase and length. This also allowed the engine bay to be long enough to accommodate their new straight-six engine. However, the rear axle was exactly the same, and the rear brakes were originally drums. Subsequently, this meant that the 2800 saloon was actually a better car in terms of performance, because it was also lighter. The CS’ advantages were therefore solely aesthetic at the beginning.

The car raced at the 24 Heures du Mans competition in 1972. It was emblazoned with a burnished grey livery accompanied by illustrious red racing stripes. For a BMW, the 2800 CS was certainly very good-looking, and it stood out amongst the other, more flamboyant competitors.
