About the car:

In early 1990, the third generation of the 3 series (E36) was launched. Designed by Joji Nagashima (as for the 5 series e39 and the Z3), this new generation had more dynamic lines and larger dimensions, which earned it the 1991 Most Beautiful Car of the Year award. The first versions are the 316i (100 hp), 318i (113 hp) and 325i (192 hp). The range was soon completed by the 320i (150 hp six-cylinder) and a diesel at the end of 1991 with the 325td (115 hp). The six-cylinder petrol engines received a technical update in 1992 to optimise low and medium torque without changing their maximum power. This variable valve timing system was named VANOS by BMW and initially only worked on the intake valves.

The E36 was launched in 1992 and as a convertible in 1993. With the arrival of the new vehicle, the 1.8 L 16-valve petrol engine with 140 hp. The two “small” four-cylinder engines in the range were slightly more powerful in 1993: 316i (102 hp) and 318i (115 hp).

In 1993, the E36 received a more powerful version of the diesel engine. The 115 hp 325td was replaced by the 325tds (143 hp). The installation of an air/air exchanger (“intercooler”) allows a better efficiency of the car.

About the brand:

The BMW 3 Series is a range of saloon and coupé cars designed by the German manufacturer BMW. This series took over from the BMW 2002 in May 1975, taking over most of its features, while adding many new developments, particularly in terms of engines. The 3 Series was once the smallest model made by BMW, before the 1 Series took its place in 2004. It was also the world’s best-selling mid-range luxury car in 2005, accounting for almost 40% of the German manufacturer’s sales1.
