Description

This was produced solely for the 1984 season. There were other, slightly different iterations that were used in prior years and years after, but the MP4/2 is without a doubt the most iconic of the lot. The chassis was designed by John Barnard, Steve Nichols, Gordon Kimball, Alan Jenkins, Tim Wright and Bob Bell. It was powered by a TAG-Porsche engine.

Like many major competitors at the time, the MP4/2 used an exclusively carbon fibre chassis. The 1.5 litre, V6 TAG-Porsche turbo engine was capable of producing 650bhp, but in a race set-up it could produce 800bhp.

It’s famed for being driven by the world-renowned Niki Lauda, who remains the only F1 driver in history to win championships with both Ferrari and McLaren. He took the MP4/2 to victory in Portugal in 1984, after starting in 11th place. Obviously, this demonstrates his skill as a driver, but it also highlights the immense engineering feat that is McLaren’s MP4/2.
