Description

Mercedes-AMG W11 EQ, Lewis Hamilton – (110200244):

The AMG F1 W11 EQ Performance is a Formula One car which has been designed and assembled by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. This was done under the watchful eye of the Technical Director, James Allison, the Chief Designer, John Owen, and various other members of staff.

Like many Formula One cars, it was designed to compete in one championship. In the case of the F1 W11, it was manufactured to compete in the 2020 Formula One World Championship. It consists of a 1.6L V6 engine, which is turbocharged and capable of producing 13,000 rpm. This works in tandem with an electric motor that consists of both an MGU-K and an MGU-H.

For the 2020 Championship, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas were the respective drivers. The F1 W11 made its competitive debut at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix. Throughout the season, the car secured an extraordinary thirteen wins – eleven for Hamilton and two for Bottas. This allowed the Mercedes team to secure a seventh successive Formula One World Constructor’s Championship. This broke the record previously held by Ferrari for consecutive championships. This pins the F1 W11 as perhaps one of the greatest racing cars of all time.

A key to its success was Mercedes’ ingenious new system known as DAS. This stands for Dual Axis Steering, and it allows the driver to adjust the toe of the front wheels. What this does is greatly optimises mechanical grip by pulling or pushing the steering wheel where necessary. DAS also allowed for much improved cornering. It was in fact so great that the system went on to being banned for the 2021 Championships.

At the Styrian Grand Prix, Hamilton took pole position at the rain-affected qualifying session. He was an enormous 1.2 seconds clear of nearest rival Max Verstappen. He led most of the race in his menacing black W11 EQ, and eventually secured the W11’s second consecutive victory. Hamilton’s teammate Bottas managed to overtake Verstappen in the closing laps, finishing second himself.
