About the car

The Sauber Mercedes C9 is a racing car produced in 1987. It was a partnership between Sauber as a constructor and Mercedes as the engine builder. The car is a soap bar-shaped, Silver Arrow body.  The car featured the Mercedes Benz M119 engine, longitudinally mounted. The car reached a speed of 400 km/h (248 mph).

Driven by the team of Italian Mauro Baldi, United Kingdom’s Kenny Acheson and Italian Gianfranco Brancatelli, the C9 finished second at the 24-hour endurance race at Le mans. The C9 dominated the race claiming a 1-2 finish at Le Mans.

The C9 dominated the 1989 World Sports Car Championship, winning 7 out of 8 races that year. It created further Mercedes history by being one of only two Mercedes cars to win Le Mans.  At the time of its retirement, the C9 had won 17(1 Le Mans, 12 WSC, 4 Supercup) of the 21 races it had entered.
