About the car
This car was produced by British Motor racing constructor, McLaren. The team had been working closely with Honda who pulled out of F1 in 1992 leaving McLaren with little choice but to work with Ford Engines for this 1993 model.
The MP4/8 was built around advanced electronics technology; including a semi-automatic transmission (which could be switched over to fully-automatic), active suspension, two-way telemetry, and traction control systems. It was powered by the 3.5-litre Ford HBD7 V8 engine and was the first McLaren to feature barge boards.
Despite the customer Ford V8 engines it used, the MP4/8 handed McLaren two podium finishes at the 1993 Japanese Grand Prix. Ayrton Senna took 1st place and Mika Häkkinen scored his first podium in 3rd position.
By the end of the 1993 season, the MP4/8 had given McLaren five victories and the team finished second in the Constructors Championship.
