Description
1979 Opel Ascona 400, White W/ Stripes – (155794000):
The Opel Ascona 400 is a rally car based on its predecessor, the Opel Ascona. A fairly timid, unobtrusive family car. It inherited its name from the lakeside resort of Ascona in Ticino, Switzerland.
Frankfurt, September 1979; Opel revealed their Ascona 400. A striking rally car with clean white bodywork and striking racing stripes. The 400 was a limited special sold for the pure purpose to make it eligible for rallying’s Group 4 category. They were built at General Motors’ factory in Antwerp.
In 1982, the 1980 world champion Walter Rohrl took the rally-modified Ascona to victory to secured an unlikely World Rally Championship drivers’ title. It was remarkable.
However, by 1984, the Audi Quattro was beginning to take centre-stage, proving to be more powerful and agile than ever. Unfortunately, the Ascona 400 fell into obsoletion, but it still holds some amazing records. It was the last rear wheel drive rally car to win the drivers’ world championship, and that was more than enough to cement its place in the history of motorsport.
