The Mercedes-AMG GT-R was chosen to be the F1 Safety in 2020. The car debuted as a safety car in Australia. It was the first race to mark resumption of F1 after global COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The Mercedes-AMG GT-R was marked with rainbow visuals and the hashtag #WeRaceAsOne. These were to symbolize and thank people all over the world for their strength and resilience in the fight against the global COVID-19. The markings also reinforced F1’s unity in the fight against racism and its commitment to do more to address inequality in Formula 1.
