Description

Porsche 935 Martini Disc – (12057):

Porsche introduced the 935 in 1976, and was the factory version of the 911 Turbo. It was prepared for FIA-Group 5 rules, and was an evolution of the Carrera RSR 2.1 turbo prototype, the second-place finisher in the 1974 24 Hours of Le Mans.

At the start of the 1977 season, Porsche were offering the 935 to customers entering the World Championship for Makes, in the IMSA GT Championship and in the German competition, the Deutsch Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM). As previously mentioned, the 935 went on to win the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as other major endurance races such as Sebring, Daytona and the 1000-kilometre Nürburgring. Of the 370 races it has entered in total, the 935 has won an astonishing 123. That’s a staggering win rate of 33.2%.

Not many other manufacturers could come close to challenging the 935, as they didn’t supply customer cars like Porsche did. At the time, every race normally featured at least five Porsche 935s. The car used a 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine, which used a mechanical fuel injection system. Combining this powerful engine with all the other advanced technical components meant the car was capable of producing 590 horsepower. The engine did however produce turbo lag at low rpm, due to the sheer size of the turbochargers. Porsche dominated so much with the 935 that it actually had to be put to a stop by the FIA in 1982. They replaced the six numbered groups with just three named groups; A, B and C.

The 935 Martini was based off of the 930 Turbo, and was well-endowed with a very powerful engine. Combining this with its fairly light weight of 970 kilograms meant that it was nimble, yet it also stuck to the surface like glue thanks to its race-tuned suspension and large rear-wing.
