About the Car

Designed by Neil Oatley, the McLaren Ford MP4/8 was a Formula One racing car that the McLaren team competed in the 1993 Formula One World Championship.  The car had advanced electronics technology, a 6-speed semi-automatic transmission, active suspension, 2-way telemetry and traction control.  The McLaren Ford MP4/8 had a 3.5 L Ford HBD7 V8 3,494 cc, 640-680hp engine.  Even though Ford-Cosworth V-8 was underpowered compared to the Renault V10, it was competitive enough to accomplish some remarkable successes.

Ayrton Senna, born in 1960, was a Brazilian Formula One racing car driver.  He won the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship in 1988, 1990 and 1991.  He unfortunately was killed in an accident at the 1994 San Marion Grand Prix driving for the Williams team.

The 1993 European Grand Prix was a Formula One race held in April 1993 at Donington Park, Leicestershire, England.  The course was 2.5 miles and 76 laps.   The race was won by Ayrton Senna who drove for the McLaren team.

About the Manufacturer

Minichamps was founded in 1990 as a die-cast car producer in Aachen, Germany under the name of Paul’s Model Art GmbH.   The original company was the Danhausen, a trade company that made 1:43 scale models and sold them over the counter and mail order.  From 1971 to 1993 the company published the famous Danhausen World Model Car Book.  Danhausen was owned by the grandsons of Emma Danhausen – Hans Peter and Paul Gunter Lang.  There was a dispute between the brothers in the late 1980’s.  That is when Paul formed the Paul’s Model Art.  Diecast models were made more for the adult clientele and holding their value was a big question that needed to be answered.  Minichamps’ excellent quality has been noticed by Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen, Opel, and BMW.
