About the car
The McLaren MP4-21 driven by Kimi Räikkönen, is the McLaren Racing team’s Formula 1 car, which competed in the 2006 Formula 1 season. Designed by Adrian Newey, Paddy Lowe, Tim Goss, Mike Coughlan and Peter Prodromou, the McLaren MP4-21 is noticeable for its striking chrome livery with red stripes, but also for its distinctive needle nose design which was also used on the MP4-19 in 2004. After an 11-year partnership with Ilmor as engine manufacturer, the MP4-21 was the first McLaren car to be propelled by pure Mercedes-Benz engines.
The car opened the season with Kimi Räikkönen and Juan Pablo Montoya, but after a few races it soon became evident that it was not as competitive as its predecessor, the MP4-20, with an apparently improved reliability offset by an underpowered Mercedes engine. For the first time since 1996, McLaren did not win a race all season. Their best results have only been second places.
